Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

so then I misunderstood you. I thought you complained and told them that even though it was fine.
What would be unethical about it, so long as you didn't lie?
Is it ethical to request compensation from a hotel even if nothing was really bad.

Nothing was very bad. It was a good bed, clean shower, great pool, I just thought it was a horrible value for money. I wrote a very polite and nice email. I explained that it was acceptable, but I was not satisfied.

This one borders on being illegal.
Why should it be illegal ? He emailed them saying honestly how he felt. If they choose to refund him then that's their choice. He's not walking off with their stuff as compensation.

Is it ethical to request compensation from a hotel even if nothing was really bad. I emailed a high end hotel after my stay and told them I felt like it was a rip off and did not fell good about my stay and requested half of the value of the stay as a compensation. They obliged.

'Nothing was really bad' means they didn't find roaches in the room, or get woken up by loud noises every night, or any number of other things that would be unacceptable no matter the hotel. Those are more typical compensation requests.

Perhaps this is what's causing te confusion. "Nothing was really bad" can be understood in 2 ways.
1. Nothing was actually wrong, and I was just complaining to get compensation.
2. Nothing was extremely bad, but it wasn't great or as good as it should be.

If you're staying at a high end hotel you should be treated as such. If they treat you like a 3 star nothing was bad but that's not what you're paying for.

I seem to detect a pattern in this thread. Every argument turns out to be just a confusion over the definition of the question...

To answer the actual question, if you're being honest with yourself and really were not satisfied with what you received given what you spent (which it sounds like is the case), I'd have no ethical qualms about asking for a partial refund. After that, it's up to the hotel to decide whether to give the refund.

Right gotcha. Thanks for the input. Will bring up the discussion with my Rabbi again.
Just shmoozed with my Rabbi. After explaining to him the idea that the bank can look up your history based on your SSN whether you have a new FFN or not, he said then he doesn't think there's an issue with churning even with a new FFN. You're looking at a happy guy here today :)

I also found out that when he was in college, he did a mileage run for someone! LOL Someone paid him to fly something like NYC-STL-ORD-IAD-DFW-IAD-NYC and I was like, that's a mileage run and he's like yeah. I was really impressed.

What if the application specifically asks, do you have a ffn? If you say no,  you are lying (granted, they can track the SSN, but can the airline?)

Why would he ever say no? He'd enter his new FFN.
