I wrote up a little post back a few years ago all about using GV. Needs a whole ton of editing. But the idea is there.
 In short if your going to use your carriers data you'll have very spotty connections and people won't be able to hear you. And calls will drop and some calls won't want to connect.     Though if you're connected to wifi the whole day then go for it.
 Otherwise spend the $8 for an Israeli sim just with data and local calls and use GV for everything else.

Use Google Fi (or something similar) for the data and text messages then set call forwarding from your primary US number to your Google voice number so it's not charging for the calls since GV is using data and not cellular network

So my phone is locked, so planning on renting mifi for data and through that calling with GV will that work ok? Then indoors will be on wifi mostly.

Should work, What carrier is your device locked to?
Many carriers would do a temporary unlock while visiting another country to alow for you to use the phone abroad.

Meaning if you have call forwarding and it comes into your tracfone device you may be charged.

Chose a new Google voice number and trying from out of the US to use it to place a call through GV app but says international network detected and can be expensive because out of US, then says when selected to place call with GV says phone not registered on network any ideas what's wrong here?

You have service? Calling another US number? Dialing the 1 or + sign?

Make sure under the Making and receiving calls setting, that prefer Wi-Fi is selected.

I have a google voice number, and I am getting am receiving spam calls about 6 times a day—all from the same area code as my phone. The spammers leave a short voicemail—not sure if it is a real person on the line. Either way, they are hogging my voicemail and it is super annoying. Is there any way to block all callers from a single area code? Alternatively, is there a way to turn off the voicemail on the line? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Just tried changing the voicemail greeting to blank message for 2:55 minutes. Hopefully, they won't wait around to leave me a message, and if I am really lucky they will finally give up on scamming me on medicare:)

Turn on filter spam in settings.

You can also turn on screen calls where they would have to say a name and you can pickup or reject the call.
