I am definitely not qualified to answer the question. I don't know all the facts nor am I knowledgeable of how these things are decided (Would they also say that he has to give her a get lechumra just in case he is actually Jewish by maternal lineage?).

My son who is learning these subjects now heard it yesterday at a shiur. The person giving the shiur told them about this and said that he referred him to a different beis din for the giyur.
