I went to Yeshiva, as did many here. Would you say the average poster would fare poorly on standardized tests and in life? If not, is it possible the Times article was a cherry-picking hit piece?

I am not defending the article. It was a one-sided hit piece.
Now I can list 10 things wrong with the school system I went to. It would be a hit piece, but the info would be correct.
I am asking about some of the claims in the article and everyone is getting defensive or deflecting. That tells me something.

To answer your question, I don't know of anyone here that would have a problem. Is there anyone here that went to the school they claim failed 100%?

At risk of letting everyone who didn't already know who I am, I worked in a Yeshiva where they learned a half a day and studied for a college degree the other half. I got full support from every Rebbe and Rav I met with in BP, and full support from every Rosh Yeshiva I met with in Lakewood (I went around letting the community know that this institution exists). Everyone agreed that for the right person this was the right fit.

This NYT article is so out of touch, it would be laughable if it weren't so dangerous. The fact is, if you want the community to raise standards in secular education, you have to let it come from within and not dictate it to them, especially in an anti-Semitic fashion as is the case, as you will just generate legitimate pushback when improvements would have been implemented organically.

Somehow the regular frum yeshivas are now fighting a fight that isn't theirs and they are getting lumped together with Chasidism. Non-chasidish yeshivas provide the basic proper education and most graduates can go straight to college if they choose to do so. Also, there is zero tolerance for physical abuse in non-chasidish yeshivas.

Somehow the regular frum yeshivas are now fighting a fight that isn't theirs and they are getting lumped together with Chasidism. Non-chasidish yeshivas provide the basic proper education and most graduates can go straight to college if they choose to do so. Also, there is zero tolerance for physical abuse in non-chasidish yeshivas.

The main reason all yeshivos are fighting this as I understand it, is because once an outside hand detrmines the ciriculum, you never know where it will end. Will they next require sex education? The morals of the country at large have shifted dramaticly recently and not in a good way. If some state regulater decides that we are depriving our children by not teaching... who know what...

Sure. But I don’t think there’s a precedent to having a determined lobbying group dedicated to attacking yeshivos relentlessly lobbying against what we hold dear and holy. And that’s exactly what YAFED has done. This is the backdrop of what’s going on here. It certainly won’t end here.

I’m not sure what that would be relevant. I don’t think it’s debatable that these rules are being put into place as a result of the relentless attacks on the yeshivos.

English is as close as it can be to the official language of the US without saying it is.

Any secular education is a means to an end not a end to a means in Judaism. Overwhelming emphasis has to be placed on learning Torah. Your ridiculous 50/50 proposition is a nonstarter.
