When will a Nachshon come out and say that we don't want state support or the strings attached?
Will it take the state moving to close a school before that happens?
There are some small "fanatics" like this, but don't expect any big mainstream to go this path. There is way too much money involved. (Check out
'CheckBookNYC' for some 'city' numbers). Take Satmar for example, they/the Rebbe feel they have the ability to ignore/do what they please, or even political power, like when the Satmar Rebbe (R' A),
held up the NYS budget Erev Pesach, and
Gov Cuomo had to call the Rebbe to beg him, as Cuomo had a campaign promise to pass the budget on time.
But on the block-vote, the grip is being lost. there was an op-ed published in the "Moment" crying that the people are ignoring the endorsements of the 'askonim', and simply voting Republican, and giving the 2021 New York City mayoral election as an example, where the askonim (ie = mosidos) endorsed Adams, & the Jewish areas voted (esp Boro Park overwhelming) for Curtis Sliwa, and the writer cried that he is an open anti-Semite. The askonim/mosidos have endorsed Hochul in this race, (see how many times she visited the Chasidish areas) and [the op-ed] claimed that her silence on the NYT article is actually that she is doing behind the scenes work, and NYT wants to rip her for not saying anything. - The askonim have endorsed Hochul in this race for "mosidos" "chinuch" etc, but may people rather care now for "crime" "covid/vaccines" etc.
But chasidim in Brooklyn never voted in mass numbers, and now they vote more Republicans, or what they see for their own believes, fueled since Trump's reelection. The askonim/mosidos can cry, but IME, they shot themselves. For years we were told like sheep vote for A, vote for B, they help the mosidos, they help the Rebbe, blah blah, but what did the people get in return? Zlich, nada. Tuition didn't drop with a nickel, and the Transportation charge that I paid monthly was renamed to "miscellaneous fee" (yah know because the city funds the busses), so when they said vote for Adams, I didn't care. On my mind then was vaccines & crime, Adams said he will do a mandate for schools, and Sliwa said he will not do that and will fight crime, so he got my vote (ok not 'mine', as I never voted while living in Brooklyn...)
Let's swing to Lakewood for a moment with the 2021 New Jersey gubernatorial election - never had Lakewood seen such hot election frenzy. We were coming out of Covid, and the VAAD endorsed Murphy, because "Hakaras Hatov" - Haka what? for the lockdowns and copying all Cuomo's stupid mandates? And his campaign tour meant a stop by the top brass, while his opponent Jack Ciattarelli visited the constituents multiples times (yah I know the difference of sitting Governor) and asked the public what they need - 'over with covid' 'fix the MVC' 'widen the Nine" - yah I know campaign promises are bs, but hey Murphy didnt even say that, while he has the power to fix the MVC, and Ciattarelli got my vote, and 60% of Lakewood's block. Murphy entered Election Day with a 10 point lead, and came out with just 2.5% lead, and throughout the night it looked very tight. Many people learned a lesson, the VAAD that their power is over, and had Lakewood come out and vote (turnout was only 37%), the race could have been way more tighter
