Men actually have a chiyuv of shabbos candles and if there is no woman lighting they would have to light and cover their eyes...

Why do you think women make the bracha after lighting instead of before and why would that reason not apply to men?

I'm not making this up, this is what I have been informed as how men are supposed to do it.
Difference basically is that men aren't bringing in Shabbos right when they make the bracha, but women are.
You are really supposed to make the brachos before you do something, so only men are able to do it that way.
I don't know why men aren't mekabel Shabbos right away when making the bracha.

But there is a only a small amount of time from when you light until Shabbos starts for you, it just isn't right away

When davening early we're told that the woman must light before the Men reach Mizmor shir because that's when they're mekabel shabbos and it applies to the entire household.

According to m"b woman are mekabel shabbos by default when lighting unless they specifically make a תנאי not to be mekabel shabbos (hence they make the Bracha before lighting and cover their eyes so that it should still be considered עובר לעשייתן) while Men by default are not mekabel shabbos by lighting unless they specifically state they are.
