My friend was on a flight yesterday. We're already taxiing, returned to gate "due to lack of fuel", then they wouldn't take off for 4 hours "due to weather". Then finally cancelled.

Not sure "what lack of fuel" is supposed to mean when you already taxiing.

No clue if this was the case, but if they decide after leaving the gate they need a longer route to avoid weather, like so:

There are others here better qualified to answer, but obviously the ideal is to follow the flight plan that was decided upon before taxiing. But pilots can change things wherever they are, whether taxiing, after take off, wherever they just need to ask atc where they are for clearance for the new plan.

Unpopular opinion : AA gets the most flak because they have the most flights. They're double the size of UA. From a cancelation / delay point of view I don't think they are actually worse, but are perceived so sure to their size.
For example, yesterday saw : UA 40% delayed and 19% canceled. AA was 32% delayed and 3% canceled
Today as of now is UA 43/19 and AA 21/2
and Saturday, prior to current storm, was UA 27/4 (123 flights) vs AA 32/0 (20 flights)

Not really an AA vs UA, but ATC slowdowns by airport based on staffing.

As for me, I had 2 AA flights cancel on me today from JFK and LGA and 1 UA from EWR.

Booked on AA and UA tomorrow from JFK and EWR. Wish me luck.

Once heard from a mom & pop computer repair store that the worst company is HP, because he has to fix those way more than any other company. When I pointed out that statistically, they sell way more than any other company, he was shocked. (This was true at the time - don't know if it is still true today.)
