I heard about it when a client of mine who was previously involved in it, and had the opportunity to buy out his partners, was looking for someone to run his back-office, and asked me if I know someone capable. At first I recoiled at the idea, which sounded totally immoral to me.
But then I read
this Bloomberg article which somewhat changed my perspective (though I still wasn't able to help my friend find someone to run his back office).

The bottom line is that the death spiral financiers, are actually HELPING companies avoid bankruptcy and face total liquidation, at the expense of greedy and ignorant "investors", who would "invest" (or rather gamble) in other junk (or at the casinos, or lotteries) if this wasn't available. The regulations are there to make sure that the financiers do indeed risk their own capital, but they definitely have the opportunity to reap handsome rewards.
