Topic Wiki

AMEX T&C on all cards state you can't have had the card within the last 12 months. Most usually specify the family (Gold, Platinum, Zync). Usually no crossover biz to personal (i.e. you can get biz bonus when you have personal).
Sometimes they only disallow that card (i.e. if you have platinum you may still get gold).
How do you know what the terms are?
READ THE T&C ON THE APPLICATION PAGE. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR!!!

Update 4/24/13:
It's no longer clear who will get the bonus, but it's very clear who will not receive it.

Beware of the new addition to the T&C of personal cards:
If you are identified as a current American Express® Cardmember, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.
We don't know yet the effects, it can't be good, so take it into consideration. It might be a way to cut off churners even after a year of having the product.

You should always send a SM several times. There were multiple reports of success if persistent enough after being denied the bonus. Don't bother calling, only SM! Don't give up so fast. Be creative and harsh. Say that a rep told you that you will get the bonus on the card. Follow up, demand an investigation and follow up again.

I am on the phone with a representative and she is saying that after May 1st, you are only eligible for bonus points on a card once in a lifetime for a card!
Please say this is not true

The problem is not that clear. You can not get the bonus for various reasons if you had a card in the same product family . Read the T & Cs and maybe you will get a better understanding .
Iam asking about the $200 airline credits not the bonus

Is the Problem that people have to get the "$200 airline credits" only if they had the exact same card in the last 12 months or even if they had the platinum MB and now they have the reguler platinum ?
Anyone ? I really need to know fast

I recently signed up for another starwoods consumer card and when I called for the points they told me I cant get them because I had a card in 07 so I called back a week later and asked again and she told me she sees in the notes that I called for them a week ago and I was refused due to the fact that i received them in 07. Is there anything I can do about it now that they put it in there notes that I cant receive them?
When did you close your first SPG card and when did you open the 2nd?

You gotta be lucky to get them. Did you spend decent amounts of money on your previously existing Amex cards? How long is your history with them?

its not about when you opened the card, but rather if you had and active card in the past 12 months. if yes, then you are not eligible for the bonus  per amex new terms. Now, you can try to huca and see if you can get the points still by falling on a nice rep, but not a guarantee ime.

Just churned PRG card and see the 25k bonus points posted
It took a long time but I just patiently waited without SM'ing/calling them
I got my SPG card at the same time and still no points (I didn't meet the $5k spend yet, but I didn't get the 10k after first purchase points...)
I guess i'll wait till i finish spending the $5k

Did you close the first before applying for the second? How much time in between?

So the Plat that they refused me the 50K on, a card which I closed a couple weeks ago? The 50K just appeared in my account automatically.
It gets even weirder. After they (rightly) refused me the points, they randomly showed up a few weeks later, as mentioned previously. Now a month after that, I receive a letter from Amex apologizing profusely for not having issued the points in a timely fashion as promised etc etc. With bated breath I log in to my account hoping for yet another 50K and... nah, the story isnt that good, there wasn't another 50k. But still, I found it funny that they sent a letter apologizing for doing what they have every legal right to do.

Has anybody had success using the $200 airline credit on AMex Platinum for airline gift cards recently?  The terms clearly state that it's not good for gift cards.

1 year after closing before reapplying seems to be allowed by Amex terms, less than that is YMMV.

So I applied for the Amex Premium Rewards Gold when I already had the regular gold card. Now they're refusing to give me the 25K bonus. Anything I can do?
