$75 fee:

-21+ days prior to departure is based on the departing city time zone, not the booking city time zone.

EDIT: I managed to call in and have them waive the fee when it was within 21 days in departing city time zone but not by booking city time zone

UPDATE: AA has removed all close-in fees

This isn't re the trick. This is a legitimate change not within 21 days from the original booking.

Outside of 21 days from when the flight is scheduled to take off there shouldnt be a $75 fee

Pretty certain the rule is that one only gets charged expedite fee when it's within 21 days of the *original* booking date.

Go ahead and try it. You'll get charged $75 upon making the change.

That's not what he's asking. He's asking about making a change to a flight that IS with in 21 days.

You got 2 different answers here.

D93 = You'll be charged $75.
AJK = You won't be charged $75.

So give it a try and report back.

IME, once you enter the 21 day period you won't be charged any change fees if you originally booked it outside of that window.

When was your experience? 2011 or earlier?
Just curious

Well, my personal experience was last year though it wasn't a date change. I changed time and class without a change fee.

But a family member I know who travels once or twice a year on an AA redemption does date changes literally every time she flies and she never had to pay as long as the original booking date was out of the 3 week window.

Shes the exception to the rule. Ive seen it discussed on FT so many times.. Making an AA booking outside of 21 days & changing it to within 21 days will incurr a $75 fee for close in

So I can book tickets for a year from now and then if I need it next month I can just switch it?
Meaning so long as the original booking date isn't within 21 days of the actual flying date there won't be a charge?

As long as the destination cities & class stay the same you can change for free. However if you have a booking & you want to change it to within 21 days it will incur a $75 close in fee.
Some people have gotten lucky not paying the $75

That's not what I meant. Look at my first post "once you enter the 21 day period". IOW, if the change gets you into this period you'd have to pay, but if you entered this period without the change, you can now do changes for free.

Exactly what i said all the way at the beginning of this discussion.

If you change to a flight that's with in 21 days, it'll incur a $75 fee, unless it's already been paid.

But some people seem to disagree.

I don't think that's accurate.

He's saying even without paying, he's saying once your original flight is within 21 days you can change it to another flight within 21 days

Eta if that's true, if I need a flight tomorrow I can book it for 22 days and change the flight in the morning...

Obviously - because you already paid the $75 when you booked the original flight.

Which is exactly what i said -

If you change to a flight that's with in 21 days, it'll incur a $75 fee, unless it's already been paid.

*from the current date but more than 21 days from the original booking date. (just to clarify)

Right, so again the example was:
Book 2/1 for flight 5/15.
On 5/1 (>21 days from brooking date, <21 from departure date) you change date to 5/14.
Would that incur a fee.

Seems the language is terribly unclear, can't see how original booking date is anything except 2/1, but like others have said it doesn't seem to be how it is enforced. Just wondering if its unclear enough I could make my case to a supervisor and get the fee waived even if they try to enforce it.
