Now that this one has a fork in it lets move on. Am I understanding correctly that there are timers that are kosher?

A timer can be kosher, yeah. Imagine before shabbos you choose to light a candle that will burn out in 2 hours as opposed to a candle that will burn out in 6 hours. So, setting a time to shut off is pretty much like that.

Can you set a timer to turn something on, off then back on?

There is nothing wrong with having electricity turn on and off on Shabbat. The Torah only forbids us to do the action of turning it on or off. So if we can set a timer before Shabbat to have the electricity turn on and off by itself then we are all set (unlike the Kosher Switch where you are setting it ON Shabbat to turn the electricity on or off).

That's true, but not for everything. You are not allowed to have a oven/hot plate turn on in Shabbos.

I understand but my point was that the timer and candle have nothing in common. To your point would it OK to hire someone for Shabbat to turn on/off your electric appliances? I work cheap.  :)

The difference between you and a timer is that you are intelligent (to some degree) and we are also not allowed to have someone do it FOR us. The timer is dumb and doesn't do anything FOR any reason, it just does what it was set up to do.

That being said, under certain circumstances it may be allowed but those are some of the more complex laws of Shabbat.

Unless you hold like r' Moshe that is not true however when the oven turns on you are not allowed to have food in it leaving you with no reason to do that
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.
