I opened up a southwest card in April, after closing a different one on in Dec 2013. My bonus points have not posted. To avoid rocking the boat, I decided to wait for another statement to close before contacting Chase. I just realized what may be the issue. When calculating the amount spent on the card, I added the statement balance on each month. The 1st month included a $99 annual fee. I suspect that does not count towards the $2000 threshold. Because I closed my previos SW account only 4 months before opening this one, I'm a little nervous about calling Chase about this issue. Would SM be a better option? Any advice?
AF is not included in spending threshold. And IME, it's better to call in. Via SM they'll tell you to call anyways.

no need to be worried about the 4 month window, they won't bother you.

As far as the points go, i've gotten them to give them in such scenarios even though technically you screwed up on this one.

But this was YOUR experience. It's not necessarily 'a given'.

I churned the sw and got 50k southwest. When I try to merge the account to my old one they said that I shouldn't have got the bonus and they're sending it to their liaison with chase and I should never received the bonus! What to do?
Update?

I'm asking you which one of my two statements you were replying "YMMV" to?
 I said:
A) you don't need to worry about 4 months, which i don't believe is YMMV. I've never heard of anyone being given a problem with such a large gap and as far as i know, the worst they will do with really short gaps is give you a hard time...
B) that i was able to get them to give me the points i didn't deserve. This is certainly YMMV. I was surprised that they gave it to me at all, i didn't mean to imply that it was a given, rather that it is worth doing a bunch of HUCA'S to try and get it even though you messed up on your end.

For the 50K? Not currently. Give it another week or 2 if it follows the same pattern as last year.
+1 I got a targeted 50k offer in the mail today, which usually means that they are getting on the way

Just spoke to rep. who said I probably won't get the bonus; but she'll put in a request. She said I'll recieve a letter with their decision within 10 days. She mentioned that even as of today I didn't reach the spend. I put on some charges yesterday, to get me over, but they didn't post yet. Should I call or message again after charges post, or wait to receive the letter? Thanks.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

it's a tough call. On one hand if you receive a no it will be harder to overturn on the other hand if they see that you have a  request pending they may be hard to work with... I would try and call after the spend posts though.

Just had this exchange via SM. What can I do? How many days am I supposed to have to reach threshold?

"Hi there,

I spoke with a representative a few days ago, and have not yet received a response. I'm not sure she accurately understood the question so I'm writing to clarify the issue.

My account was opened on April 11th, 2014. One of the reasons I opened the account was the great signup bonus of 50,000 southwest points. I was aware that I must spend
$2000 within just over 3 months, and was careful to do so. When my points didn't post, I figured I'll wait for the next months statement to close before contacting Chase. A
month later it still didn't post. I went over my transaction history and realized my mistake. I calculated $2000 by adding the first 3 statements together not realizing that the 1st statement included the $99 annual fee.

I have been banking with Chase for a number of years. I have remained a loyal customer because of the professional courteous customer service I have consistently received. I hope that you can extend that courteousness to this situation. While I technically did not meet the exact requirements of this offer, my miscalculation is quite understandable.

Thanks in advance,
Thingywingy"

Their response
"Dear Thingywingy,

Thank you for contacting Chase regarding the Enrollment Bonus with your Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Credit Card account.

In reviewing your application details, the offer was to receive a 50,000 Rapid Reward Bonus. To qualify for the bonus points, you must make purchases totaling $2,000.00 or more during the first three months from account opening. The bonus is systematically generated by the date the qualifying spending of $2,000.00 is met.

Purchases do not include balance transfers, cash advances, cash-like charges such as travelers checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks that access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.

Our records reflect that the total amount spent in purchases during the promotional timeframe did not meet the $2,000.00 spending requirement. Regrettably, the account does not qualify for the Enrollment Bonus and we are unable to extend the promotional timeframe.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the Secure Message Center.

Thank you,

Angeline Obial
Customer Service Specialist"

I get a Mazel Tov!

I responded to them
"Hi there,

I recently received a letter from Chase regarding interest that was mistakenly charged to my credit card. I did not think "look how Chase is not honest with my money" or "see they can't be trusted; I should stop banking with them". That is not my attitude toward Chase because in our long relationship I have seen your dedication to customer service. That level of trust allows me to be flexible; to bear in mind that mistakes especially small ones just happen.

Regarding the issue addressed in my earlier message, where my I made a miscalculation of 5% of how much was spent, I
expect similar flexibility. Please forward the above correspondence to a manager for review. I hope that Chase can find a way to resolve this issue. If it requires some other criteria to be met, that is fine with me.

Thanks for you understanding,
Thingywingy"

Their response
"Dear Thingywingy,

We appreciate you taking the time to write to us regarding your Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Credit Card account serviced by Chase Bank. I had the opportunity to review your message in detail, and can certainly understand your concerns with the enrollment bonus on the account.

As you were unaware the annual fee was not included toward the spending of $2,000.00 in purchases, I have honored the
enrollment offer on the account.

I am pleased to confirm that I have added 50,000 Rapid Rewards points to your account. The 50,000 points will be sent to Southwest Airlines when your statement closes on November 1, 2014. Although Southwest Airlines generally posts the points within a few days they do request you allow up to thirty days after the billing statement has closed to post the points to your Rapid Rewards account.

If you have any questions concerning the information in this message, please call me at the number below. If we can help in any other way, please contact us through the secure message center.

Sincerely,

Christian Albrecht
