Where do you get 4 minutes of totality within 30 mins of Montreal?
Lacole which is 44 mins from montreal gets 3:19.

Right. And functionally, no difference between 2 and 4, let alone 3 and 4.
Perhaps, depends how many different things you want to try out and if you're a photographer.
With more time, there's more time to take photos and have some time to just enjoy the mind-blowing scene.

And to experiment:

A tl;dw of the points discussed with the doctor. He has an app for the eclipse
https://goo.gl/wZ5Uyz

Temperature gets cooler in the ground first.
Tells you how to make a pinhole projector
Tells you to get safe glasses
Shadows that are parallel to the crescent are sharp. While shadows that are perpendicular are fuzzy
As well as round holes the sunlight going through them will be crescent shaped.
Air from hills will cool down and roll down towards you creating a slightly chilly wind. If there are hils getting blocked sunlight first.
Certain types of clouds will disappear.
Animals will behave differently. Crickets will chirp. Birds will be going back to their nests. Bees will get confused and wait until it's over. Chickens also something like that.
The color of things will change
There will be these weird shadows that look like they are moving on the ground. Especially visible right after the sun comes back out.

Worth noting that during totality, don't use eye protection.

Any suggestions on airline Sweet-Spots from NYC region, to anywhere with totally?

I do already have bookings to SYR & CLE (of course refundable).

If traveling from NYC by car, is Buffalo the closest totality area?

Plattsburgh is fairly closer.

You cannot see totality from a plane if the sun is too high in the sky. The eclipse in Texas and Detroit is close to (solar) noon so you will miss it.

You would then see probably shadows on the ground from totality

It seems Syracuse is the closest.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Syracuse is not on the centerline.

That wasn't his question.

Is there much to gain by going to the center line vs 10 miles into the path of totality?

It's all about the duration of totality.
Buffalo - 3 minutes and 38 seconds
Plattsburgh - 3 minutes, 34 seconds
Syracuse - 1 minute and 24 seconds

I find the "Avg. Cloud Cover" feature very helpful!

Buffalo - 3 minutes and 38 seconds
Plattsburgh - 3 minutes, 34 seconds
Syracuse - 1 minute and 24 seconds
Go a little deeper into the Syracuse area to say Baldwinsville and you'll get well over 2 minutes. Is it worth the extra hour each way to Plattsburgh or 2 hours to Buffalo (and likely Eclipse traffic) for a little more totality?

From the American Astronomical Society Website...

Important: We do not recommend searching for eclipse glasses on Amazon, eBay, Temu, or any other online marketplace and buying from whichever vendor offers the lowest price. Before you buy a solar viewer or filter online, we recommend that you make sure that (1) the seller is identified on the site and (2) the seller is listed on this page.
