BUT... I find this argument extremely ironic. The last time I heard this argument, it was the Democrats who said that ask=tell, while it was the Republicans who said that ask≠tell.

I have no idea how a child would take what you said. I know how an adult (spouse) would take it.

But if I told my spouse what happened and she happened to have overheard she would NOT say, "No, you didn't tell her, you asked her" because when the one you are talking to is required to listen, asking is just a nicer way of telling.
My spouse is not REQUIRED to do my will.

Wrong, I have been asked many times by my boss to do something and politely said no.
It is a sign of respect to ask in those situations.
Perfect example: Can you work overtime this Friday? No I already have plans.
That is why the words don't have the same meaning in the same context. English 101.

There they are not asking you do something. They are asking you *if* you are willing to do something.
