Eastbound 96th street is currently backed up from Biscayne Blvd. to A1A. We suggest that persons wishing to enter the area go north to 163 Street and head east from there. There is a checkpoint on A1A to enter Surfside. Only persons who live in this area will be allowed to enter. A photo ID showing place of residence is required. Please do not attempt to enter Surfside if you do not have the proper ID. You will only create additional backups. Thank you for your cooperation and please have a safe day.

(This seems accurate, it's currently 40 minutes plus to enter Surfside from any direction, and from the south it's closed.

I assume this is because of overcrowding near the site and to prevent the need for major crowd control, but I don't know.)

I learned that the hard way on Friday. Was swinging by a friend and My brain told me to go down Biscayne and then 125.. got stuck on Byron, gave up then went back to 72nd Street and across the causeway

A little bit of positive news. Met a friend yesterday, his grandfather owns an apartment in the building but was currently away. He mentioned that his relatives were supposed to arrive Thursday for a vacation, and that one family member left earlier and was en route from FLL at the time of collapse.

That's what I was told. You know flight times better so maybe it doesn't make sense, perhaps he stopped to get food, maybe my friend was misinformed.

Yeh I see now a couple flights for today scheduled to arrive after 12am, after deplaning and leaving the airport, and a 47 minute drive could easily arrive after 1:19am.

Or maybe enroute to the airport when he heard about the collapse.

Certainly not a 47 minute drive in normal times at midnight. Probably 25 minutes. But, still possible anyway.

i just drove from surfside to the airport this morning. 29 minutes. At that time of night, 25 minutes is doable. Either way details dont really matter. Such a sad sad situation, absolutely devastating. Only bright side, if you can call it that is seeing the enormous amount of chesed being done.

En route from FLL at 1:30am?

FLL has been a madhouse recently due to the recent storms. Flights are getting delayed 4-6 hours and then they all come in late at night.
I was there last Sunday and it took me 20 minutes sitting through standstill traffic to get from terminal 1 to T 4. Crazy.

Nice story, but color me skeptical. Did her part of the building actually come down, or was it in the part that remained standing?
If there was that much time (and time to get towels when the building is falling down ), there would be more survivors from the part of the building that collapsed IMHO.

Who knows how long the creaking noises were going on before she returned home.  It was long enough that they were already loudish.  In addition, she, herself, needed time to register there were noises, contemplate, walk to the security guard to complain, discuss with him, run back to her apartment, yell to her children, listen to her daughter object because of tznius, re-yell to her, run out of the building to the street, then turn around to see the collapse. 

I'd say at least 10 if not 20 minutes.

Nothing here indicates his apt collapsed. The people in the half of the building that didn't collapse survived.
