Something to keep in mind is that this study compares transgender people who went through surgery to the general population, not to trans people who didn't get surgery. In other words, it just tells us what we already knew, i.e. that trans people have an extremely high suicide rate, even after surgery.

For it to say anything meaningful about the surgery, they would have to compare tran people who underwent surgery to trans people who didn't, and see if the suicide rate goes down. (The fact that they didn't do this leads me to suspect that they may have an agenda.) My recollection is that studies which were properly structured showed at best a very minor reduction in suicidal ideation in the short term and no benefit in the long term.

from what I understand they took the samples from medical care facilities. So no mental health records to compare.

Obviously it would be best to have both but this is still somewhat informative.  if you compare it to other studies of trans gender suicide rates. 
When I first read the study I though the control group was for psychiatric hospitalization which would be much more informative.
