No, I (obviously) didn't take this picture.  But thought it was worthy of posting here...
Lol, that can't be real.

Left at 4PM and still driving to NYC. ETA 2:30AM. So 10.5 hours driving without stopping once (we have RV). Would do it again in a heartbeat…but sleep over after the eclipse next time!
Left at 4:45PM, ETA is 4:40AM and climbing... (did 2 stops, both of which took forever due to long lines).

Stayed at a hotel with my family last night in Clifton NY (north of Albany). Original plan was to go to Lewis, NY at i87 exit 32. This morning did not have much good news in regards to cloudiness in that area, but headed towards Plattsburgh at 10:30am as it had somewhat better chances supposedly.

After bouncing around some places, we ended up at Plattsburgh airport parking lot which I liked because it had a bathroom while we waited.

In the end, it was cloudy during the eclipse but we still had an amazing time, and it doesn’t seem that the clouds impeded our view at all. The moment that the little slice of sun disappeared behind the moon was breathtaking. We had 3:33 of totality and every second was special, including the transformation back to the slice of sun.

I was also surprised to see the little red light on the bottom left of the eclipse, and found out that it’s a solar prominence, it was really visible during this eclipse.

My kids enjoyed it a lot, and it was certainly a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Dan and other members for sharing your experiences and knowledge to help us enjoy this event!

Our drive back - we thought we left quickly, but we ended up stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours, getting home at 11pm.

I took some pics and videos, but I definitely did not do research (camera lenses get damaged in the sun?) nor did I come to take pro-style pics; enjoying the moment was enough for me. But I’ll share the best pic I took.

Heard something fascinating. Of all the 290 or so moons in our solar system. Our moon is the only one to have a total solar eclipse. ( meaning the moon exactly blocks the son, not less and not more).

  • Left 5T at 4 with plans to daven in Albany at 8.
  • Had no traffic so continued to Plattsburg...total driving 5 hours. Shachris was called for 9:30 but in the 1 hour I was there, prob 5-6 minyanim were going on and more people coming as we were leaving.
  • Speaking to people there we decided to go around the lake do to incoming clouds, into VT and parked at St. Albans Bay.
  • Incredible experience!
  • Drove 20 minutes to Burlington for mincha
  • left Burlington at 5pm....got home at 2am
We had an incredible experience so no regrets but I wonder if the view was as good in Plattsburg and how much time that would have saved us coming home.

Wondering how long it took from Schroon Lake to Lakewood . I know from Plattsburgh it took about 7 hours

Just want to say a massive thank you to @jj1000 and @Dan for pushing us to go. First started considering it on Sunday after reading the DDMS post and I guess I had just seen one more post on this thread about 100% or bust and finally made the decision to chase totality at 8:30 AM this morning.

Got the whole family packed in the van and we headed towards Schroon Lake NY from Lakewood (usually a 4:40 drive) at 9:15. Traffic was barely an obstacle, including a stop for gas/bathrooms we made it in to Frontier Gateway with plenty of time to spare at 2:25 with totality scheduled for 3:26. The sky was mostly clear, and after getting washed up and ready at a HOPPING gas station full of people including many who were frum we found a quiet space with clear open views and some knowledgeable people who shared with us some of their experiments such as the little crescent displays and the “million snakes” on white sheets.

The whole experience was amazing, including the period before as it got darker and we were able to see the sun disappearing. The ~15 minutes leading up to the climax and then the 2 minutes of actual totality were absolutely surreal. The swiftly creeping darkness, rapid temperature drop, changing sounds, excited tension in the air and mass holding of breaths and cheering. Just different than anything else I can remember. At totality, it was such an amazing experience seeing the displays of color and bursts of powerful light and I can tell you right now the photos and videos I saw do ZERO JUSTICE to the experience of seeing it live. I think anyone who experienced totality today would agree with me. You felt something special, as if Hashem was speaking to you personally. I guess you could say it put the word “awe” in “awesome”.

We packed up and raced out within a couple of minutes of totality, making sure to check on the sun through our glasses every now and again on the way back as well. The way back there was some traffic but we were no longer racing the clock. 10 hours of driving later, there is one thing I am certain of: we will not regret having gone.

I'm a sucker for a good lake view, and I assume the eclipse was over the lake on the VT side, but not on the NY side. When I was considering going, St Albans was gonna be my pick.

left Monsey around 8:30 arrived 1:30 to Cumberland Bay State Park (Plattsburgh).
Amazing experience and views, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Crowd was also festive. Left 4:30 traffic all the way through and arrived to Monsey around 11:30. Sun was not over the water. This is what it looked like from NY side:

Assuming the above pictures were taken during totality, I see that although it darkens up very much on the ground, the sky though remains more bright than I thought.
