Finally got to mur. I’ve now tried all the major 5towns restaurants always looking for something near the level of a top NYC restaurant so I don’t have to shlep in anymore, and this was probably the closest I have gotten. Had a new (Jewish) waiter and he was good and overall the service was much better than other Long Island service-level places like doma. We got apps and drinks and shared a dessert. Overall would be prob an 8/10 on food, but service and location make it worthwhile for a night out at about $220 all in with above 20% tip.
Drinks: unfortunately no beers allowed here (I take that as an affront) but wife got a cucumber smash cocktail she loved, and I got sparkling, otherwise they will give u tepid tap water so it’s prob worth the $8 for the liter of pellegrino.
Tuna tartare was about 6/10, the crackers had a great crunch, probably 1.5x the crunch u would get from most chips at other restaurants renditions of this dish (good) but the actual dollop of tuna and avocado was a little smaller (still same nyc price of about 22) and the tuna on this Tuesday evening was not on the level of those restaurants. The spicing was good, as with most of the dishes here.
Eggplant carpaccio- this is their signature dish they love to show, and I get that some people love it, but it was kind of meh to me a 4/10. Came with the great chips too, but was basically a babaganush/tahini-ish mix that might be nice to dip a bit of challah into, but not as a 17 app.
Shwarma - this was a heftier priced app at 23 and basically a great mix of chicken and lamb shwarma, some of it was a little dry, and they brought it out too early so it was a little cold after we were done with tuna. Came with pitas which were nothing to write home about. The chummus, amba and other flavorings really made this great, but honestly I’d prefer more chips than the pitas. 8/10, was better than the $35 shwarma from allenbi in crown heights (in my distant memory) but still not at the level of Israeli gas station shwarma.
Baby back ribs 9/10 really well done fall off bone back ribs with a lil smoke to it, but it is a cheap cut and the pom sauce should have been more expressive and hit u at the front but instead felt like it was cooked out. Also the restaurant is really dark and I didn’t realize there was some extra little bone parts on the side of one (they keep it really dark in mur) and I had to spit em out a bit awkwardly… endive and orange salad on side didn’t really go great with it, and $40 price tag was pretty high
BALAGAN!! I somehow didn’t register my pic of the plate but got the leftover last rib now. I thought I took a clear pic of the full balagan, which was the highlight for sure and a 10/10, lamb ribs (not just the tiny riblets u get at some places with minimal meat u rip off with one bite), but a much more substantial bite and layer of meat on top that made it a good value at 32 (4 total ribs on my plate, really 3 chunks of meat atop the 4 bones). Perfect flavoring and nice sear on outside and juicy middle. Bahn mhi like accompanying salad isn’t for everyone but pretty nice and just right pickling.
We weren’t going to get dessert but they had a strawberry fudge that was light and fresh, I could almost taste the special Palmolive flavoring from the mashgiach’s specialty strawberry marinade, 7/10. Note it’s a very small cup.
