One tidbit…He only ate fish and dairy. He explained that in Russia keeping kosher was a huge nisayon and very often a family would have separate pots for the wives and children to eat due to health reasons. At some point many people would just give up and say, they’re eating why shouldn’t I also? Why should the father keep it if everyone else is already being nichshal. So he made himself a neder to never eat fleishig.. and was never matir neder even after reaching Eretz Yisroel and living in frum communities!!!!

TBH. I would have a hard time recognizing him from that picture. I mostly recall seeing him ~30 years ago.

Wow. He looked like the oldest man on earth when I saw him. It literally felt like we were hearing stories of 100 years ago..
Btw, I think he was the only Lubavitch grown up person (ashkenazi) I ever saw with long peyos.

I remember him speaking on behalf of the Russians in Kiryat Malachi, in a NY yeshiva. The Rosh Yeshiva told me after, that even though the American bochurim probably don't understand a word of his heavy Russishe Yiddish, but it was the extreme passion that he spoke with, that made it Devorim hayotzim min halev nichnosim el halev... yehi zichro Baruch

I always enjoyed when he came to my house and exchanged old soviet stories with my father.

On topic; when my father was in a soviet gulag, he asked the legendary R' Mottel Lifshits ZTZ'L how he made it through Pesach by fasting - and he responded that my father should not even try any of that shtick, he should eat whatever he needs to in order to make it out alive...
