I hope you posted this before he actually made the kiddush 
On a side note, a kiddush with just water and whatever type of grape juice/wine you're actually making the kiddush on is lame. I hope @SuperFlyer has some shmaltz herring on the side.

Considering where I live, there is plenty, especially if you take into account that I don't like fish.
For some reason, people don't take it lightly, and will need to reconfirm: Also not herring?  Also not tuna?  Also not salmon?  But you never tried the way it's really supposed to be prepared, it doesn't even taste like fish...

I was told by some post graduate PhD herringologists, that really the onions, while they taste great, are the way to cover up that it's not totally fresh (read: from the barrel)
