It seems like the liberal propaganda got to you again. Being in the vicinity of a gun doesn't put you in harms way. This may be hard to believe, but guns don't pick themselves up and start randomly shooting. The gun is only as dangerous as the person holding it.
In this case it's just the opposite. Being in a dangerous area already, this gives the mother the ability to defend herself and the baby from attack, making the baby safer than it was without the gun.

because before 1967 the Pali's were all cool with the Israelis, there were no terror attacks back then...

(Side note, are you aware that before 1967 the PLO charter explicitly excluded the shtachim and Gaza from the lands the "Palestinians" have a claim to?)
