At what point does it become dangerous to look at the sun without glasses? Is there a percentage of blockage or some amount of time before eclipse?
None of the sites seem to discuss this point! How long before n after y'all gonna wear the glasses for- if u plan on looking up?
100%/totality- no glasses.
99%- glasses.

I’m on the way to Vermont from NYC. Upstate NY looked worse.
Got an RV and can dock anywhere. Any advice on the best current location/ forecast for  Vermont /NH?

It’s always dangerous to look at the sun. What’s different about looking at the sun during an eclipse is that (for scientific reasons that made sense when I read them but that I’m unable to repeat - Google it) one doesn’t feel the burning during an eclipse, even though it’s just as damaging.
I would imagine the more it's covered the less dangerous (albeit still dangerous). It's more about how long you would typically look at the sun vs how long your tempted to now.

Thanks we’ll be in Newport tonight! Checked all the towns east until NH and it all looks like similar cloud forecasts. So figured worth sticking to Newport for now. Not doing Maine. Just too far but looks amazing

I’d think the opposite. The whole reason it’s dangerous is because it’s easy to look at it without your eyes squinting or feeling pain.

I think he means that most people don’t feel tempted to look at the sun (not only because it burns but) because it’s there all the same every day.

Something to keep in mind is that while there are large swaths of cloud cover, not all clouds are created equal. There are areas that have significant cloud cover forecast, but very negligible cloud thickness (the amount of sunlight that is blocked.) While not ideal, these areas can still make out pretty well.

Illinois and Indiana have a significant amount of cloud cover, but very little in the way of cloud thickness on the short term models.

Same goes for Plattsburgh and Burlington

Of course Maine is still the better viewing area.

Cleveland is mixed on both counts but just to the west the cloud thickness really drops off the cliff

Western NY has substantial coverage as well as thickness.

If you are mobile you definitely want to follow the latest short term forecast to find an area of clearing, but if not many locations still have a decent shot despite cloud coverage.
