We know that they took one side of the argument. Considering that this was R Aharon's opinion and even the Sons of Israel eruv kept to it there is a strong argument to call it minhag hamakom.

That argument would need much more salt and pepper to be able to outweigh the halachic (and hashkafic, but that doesn't have to be on the scale here) considerations on the other side.

It is very common in Lakewood that people walk past the limits of an eruv without realizing it. They assume that it is all one contiguous eruv where it really is not. This likely happens tens of times on any given shabbos in various parts of Lakewood. I saw it on my block right when I moved in before our eruv was complete.

Hard to argue with Rishonim who say it is and one of the core responsibilities of the Rav of the locale to implement as soon as possible.

That's not even referring to the issue that Aygart mentioned of having a half-baked eiruv.
