I'll try an analogy:
Imagine Dan/JJ decide to suddenly retire 1 day and pass DDMS to MendelRandom without passing him any of the knowledge. Not to disparage MendelRandom, but DDMS would never be the same. This is Twitter now.

However, imagine MendelRandom decided to start MRDMS 15 years ago and build it up organically. This is Tesla.
No idea how many engineers and developers they retained, but clearly Elon is less risk averse to trying new things out that would have taken much longer to be implemented under previous leadership.
