One line summary:
Areivim USA is a dignified way to give צדקה. It is not Life Insurance and doesn't guarantee any sort of financial protection to its members. it is registered as a religious organization and as such isn't required to incur the additional cost of preparing and filing form 990 with the IRS.

I spoke to Areivim at length as I sell life insurance and wanted to best advise ppl that had Areivim already and wanted to supplement it with LI.
I was told that it has never happened that Areivim declined to pay out based on someones assets or LI. It has happened that the family told them they don't need the money, but they never told the family no.
Simple reasoning is, they also think that 100K per yasom doesn't really cover it, the program just won't allow for a higher payout at $28/ monthly. So they encourage everyone to have LI as well to make sure kids are adequetly covered, and owning LI does not disqualify a payout [unless each kid will receive over a million dollars etc].

27) The bereaved family’s funds will be overseen and distributed by trustees comprised
of all or some of
  • an Areivim USA representative,
  • a representative of the family,
  • a financially-proficient individual selected by the family,

All trustees must be approved by Areivim USA.

Guys, it's a reference to a story made more famous by Shlomo Carlebach about a Yid who was called "Yossele the Holy Miser". Not to derail the thread, but here is an amazing follow-up to the story
WOW and thanks for sharing the link to the unbelievable story. I cried again reading it.  (because I remember when it all happened years ago, and it was a big to do)

Fantastic story! There should definitely be a thread of the best stories from "Here's my story."

When we were studying for smicha in YOEC we were all terrified that R' Dovid would be as terrifying as his younger brother, the Rosh, when he tested us. But he was as sweet as can be.

A parent or step parent or uncle or married sibling or sibling in law among many others

It's certainly possible, but seems like a relatively low risk, in this context (where there are young children/orphans, that need to be married off).

The surviving spouse should be relatively young (with full mental capabilities) at the time their children are getting married.

It may or may not be a proof, but among those with life insurance (or substantial assets), I would guess that a very small % (<2%) of people stipulate how their surviving spouse (from a first marriage) use the proceeds (or set up constraints in their Will for how the spouse uses that), presumably trusting their spouses judgement in handling that properly.

As stated many times on this thread, Areivim is NOT life insurance, rather a tzedaka, where all members agree to pay automatically if/when a member passes on with unmarried children. The funds are supposed to be used for marrying the children off - Hachnansas Kallah (in some cases the trustees will allow for it to be used for other things, but that's why there are trustees - to make sure the funds managed properly). So no real comparison to a will or life insurance - Its tzedaka funds which need to be used for the intended purpose.

While I was on vacation I saw some story in my google news feed about Areivim Israel being sued for 44 million shekel, but i had no time to read it then and now i cant find anything about it...

Btw, this is Areivim Israel version (pictures of pamphlet - their website doesn't have T&Cs that I can see). I found it interesting to read. They seem to be backed by Vaad Harabbanim, which is a legitimate organization with Gedolim behind them. (They write an interesting calculation why it's not a deficiency in bitachon to join - they say the fact that tens of thousands of bnei Torah will lose money if you were to die is in of itself a protective measure, as their merit and fact that they don't deserve this loss will prevent any of the members from perishing and necessitating charging all the members of the group.)

There are actually two israeli vrsions of Areivim: Areivim, backed by Kupat Hair, and Kol Yisroel Areivim, Backed by Vaad Harabbonim....

Are they allowed to raise the price for past members? What if I don't agree to the new price, can they legally void the contract?
