They have been working non stop, they were trying to see if they can get any access inside the rubble to find survivors without using any tactics that would jeopardize the rubble and cause harm to potential survivors.

They were not successful in those efforts.

If they’re assuming all those missing have perished r”l, they might go extra slow with the excavation if they think there’s evidence in the rubble that has to somehow be preserved.

But there’s probably practical changes they will make to their process, and when they do it’s best they notify families so as not to extend false hopes. Heartbreaking to follow this story.

If they would have located dozens of bodies by this point, you can maybe argue that had they gotten there sooner these folks could have been saved (on the rare assumption that they survived a 12 story concrete total collapse). Perhaps there’s some comfort in realizing that this procrastination, despite being arguably unjustified, didn’t impact the outcome.

Can someone explain to me what FEMA being "ready to deploy" would have helped in the first 24 hours?
(other than being a governmental version of the Red Cross?)
It's job is to manage large scale emergencies, which have ramp up time. It's not an emergency response unit.
I doubt that they have access to resources that could have been there with in 24 hours that the state does not have equal access.

I don’t think it’s anyone here’s call to determine whether there was procrastination. But if there was, we might never know whether it did or didn’t affect the outcome.

I believe you are referring to the mother of the 15 year old, Stacie Fang, and she was originally discovered in the rubble and pulled out right away on Thursday. IINM she was counted as part of the 35.

How foolish of me to even speculate that maybe not everything that could be done was being done. We have lived through enough the past year to know not to have blind faith in our elected (and unelected) officials, and realize that politics and ego unfortunatly play a large role.

It’s foolish because it’s a fools game to think that experts can approach the rubble, completely understand and assess the situation within seconds, and do everything as perfectly as possible without risking any further lives. So you’re watching them and wondering why do they need to think, why does it have to be deliberate, and you criticize because you are not the one sending in dozens or hundreds of rescue workers that are at extreme risk of death if you didn’t properly think the situation through, or continually asses the situation based on new info coming through.

Keep in mind that even the experts don’t see this extreme a situation too frequently (maybe not even ever), and you might have different experts with different fields of expertise (and perhaps divergent priorities/approaches) that have to come to a consensus.

It's always easiest to be an armchair quarterback, and hindsight will be 20/20.
You just have to remember that you have no skin in the game, and you may have info now that the decision maker did not have in the moment.

It's Barack Obama syndrome. We all know more about search and rescue than the experts. More structural engineering that the engineers. More geology than the geologists. More disaster management than those who train for it.
