I suggest you read יהדות התורה והמדינה which AFAIK was written at the behest of the Rebbe (rumor is that after publication the comment from the Rebbe was נישט גענוג שארף).

No leather, some people wear yk-style shoes, slippers, or crocs. Some people go in socks.
