Is there a way to insert nekudos in MS Word when typing Hebrew?
yes, IIRC if you press caps lock and then shift-numbers, it will place the nekuda that corresponds to that number under the letter you just typed. You can use On Screen Keyboard to see which nekudos are which letters.
Are you sure that still works? I've used it in the past, but I've tried it recently with no luck...
Follow these instructions and it works!https://superuser.com/questions/685582/how-to-add-hebrew-vowels-in-word-2010
Works! But the instructions are not so clear. You first have to add the "Hebrew" keyboard and only then will you be able to remove the "Hebrew (Standard)" keyboard.
To restore this functionality, change your keyboard layout to Hebrew, and remove the Hebrew (Standard) layout.
It kind of says that, but missing the explanation of how to get to the keyboard to add/remove them
"Change" is not the same as "install"

Or - and I think it's way better you just need to change what you're used to - use the new method for Nikud in Windows using the Right-Alt key (and there is no need for Caps-lock and then Shift). It's done by pressing the AltGr (right side Alt) key with the key (Hebrew key) with the name of the Nekuddah, see this chart:
