How familiar are you with Lakewood? This story shocked me, and there is zero chance there are more than a handful of similar people. (Not that I think there are a handful).

Or do you mean go on innocuous vacations with their family?

A source within the Orthodox community told me about something of a pattern among some of its most ardent religious scholars who devote their lives to study and need ways to blow off steam. A very small percentage—maybe 1 percent this source estimated—go on tropical vacations alone, or jaunts through Europe, or might even take a few forays into Manhattan nightlife.

But that's not what the article claims. It says 1% of "it's most ardent religious scholars." That doesn't mean 1% of the Lakewood population.

This really belongs in the other thread. Basically he was funding his lifestyle with various schemes/fraud and it would have perpetuated itself indefinitely if things hadn’t unraveled, causing him to run out of money. That was the beginning of the end.

I was thinking about that, it's really just "fake it till you make it"

I know a restaurant proprietor (not kosher) who owns a few clubs, he was very familiar with kosher. When I inquired he told me at one of his clubs he has a large group of "ultra orthodox" that come in the afternoon (before they officially open) and essentially rent the place out. Girls and all... I was shocked, but apparently it does happen.

Yeah, that's what i found amusing, here were a group of (seemingly) married men doing who knows what mid afternoon when their wives think theyre working, but always with kosher food (i'm sure with a great hechser as well ). Normally they would have a caterer bring in food and have a "buffet" station setup.
