2x3 would be the size for me, but those weigh a ton. The internal frame is currently made of 2x2s and it's heavy as is.

Bingo, this might just do it. The size you linked to is too small, but I can get the 1x5.5" and cut it lengthwise to give me 2 1x2.75s, which is perfect.

I really don't know much about woodworking yet I'm working on a gigantic (at least for me) project. It's a fun learning experience.

Either one is the right way to do it. I am not sure Lowes/Home Depot has the equipment (table saw) to rip it, but I guess we will find out.

Ie splitting it into 2 along the length. Their cut station looks like this generally, and it's designed for cutting down sheet goods. Doesn't mean they can't do it - doesn't hurt to ask.

The truth is that this shape would be the simplest by far. The questions is just how the heck would I get something like this:

Reason this is simpler is because it can just be screwed into the main frame. Using MDF or PVC etc for a simple frame would be a lot more difficult to attach.

You can screw into those materials same as regular wood.

As far as that shape, you can screw 2 different pieces together. In addition to the 1x5.5 ripped lengthwise, you could get their 5/8x1.5 boards.

As @skyguy918 pointed out, probably two pieces put together. It would be really tricky to rip a piece down on a table saw with a dado blade.
