It's not just bikers that don't know the laws, most motorists don't know either. I've been biking regularly around the city for 10+ years, and it's a bit daunting sometimes when you're near cars or not on a dedicated bike lane.
The thing that always scared me most while biking, was the fear of drivers opening their car doors while you're passing... Which did in fact happen to my brother a number of years ago, he got knocked right off his bike, face first. BH, besides for a few bruises, and being soar the next few days, he was ok. (BH he was wearing a helmet as well!) It's definitely scary thinking about what could have happened had there been a car driving by.
Drivers should definitely be cautious before opening their car doors...
